Second Episode of "Superman and Lois"
In the afternoon, before Episode 2 of the new CW show Superman and Lois even aired (on 03/02/2021), the CW renewed the program for a second season. Those numbers on the pilot must have been really something, because that show cannot be cheap to make, and they didn't even bother to see how the show did Tuesday night when viewers would vote with their feet based on what they'd seen. My guess is that streaming numbers were very good, indeed - and, I think it was shown on WB owned TV channels TNT and TBS to catch any cable-bound stragglers.
The notion of *why* the show was working for me kind of kicked in during episode 2. And it's both totally obvious based on the premise, but for me - as someone who has thousands of Superman comics, has seen countless hours of TV and movies, read multiple histories of Superman... it somehow didn't quite resonate til it did.
Superman got to move on.

Today is the 100th Birthday of Noel Neill
Today is the 100th birthday of the late Noel Neill, the original live-action Lois Lane.
Neill mostly famously played Lois Lane for five seasons of The Adventures of Superman alongside actor George Reeves.

Happy Birthday, Lois Lane
Lois is having a pretty good year. She's been key to the entirety of the Rebirth efforts around Superman as the comics squared the Superman/ Lois romance/ marriage once again, and gave them a son in Jon Kent. Since Bendis came on the Super-books, he's put Lois back at the fore, first as someone Superman missed as she left for space, and then as a source of consternation as she's deposited herself in Chicago rather than Metropolis.
There's no question Lois's storyline is just getting bigger, and it sure doesn't hurt that she's starring in the super-books, deeply involved in Event Leviathan and currently has her own 12-issue maxi-series by Greg Rucka (a great fit for Lois) that I'm actually really enjoying.

"Superman: The Movie" 40th Anniversary
Superman: The Movie premiered at the Uptown Theatre in Washington DC on December 10th, 1978.
I don't think I need to tell you guys I'm a bit of a fan of Superman, as both character and media staple. And, I imagine, it started with this film. After all, one of my earliest memories, writ-large, is my dad taking me to see Superman: The Movie in the theater and telling my mom how much I liked it when I got home. It was all in that era before you know our hero will be fine when Lex dumps them into a pool with kryptonite chained around their neck.
In the 40 years since, the movie has aged incredibly well - a few bits now dated, others pointing the way for superhero movies and beyond, and all part of an era of filmmaking of sweeping cinematography, cutting edge practical effects, classical scoring and sincerity and humor in spades. The performances have become classics upon which everything else is (rightly) judged, embedded in the (pop) cultural lexicon.

LOIS NEWS: We Have a New Lois Lane! (CW Superhero Shows News)
If you hang around these here parts, you know we're fans of the character Lois Lane in all her forms, be it comics, television, movies, what-have-you. She's as big of a deal in our world, practically, as Big Blue himself.
Season 2 of the CW hour-long-drama Supergirl saw the arrival of Tyler Hoechlin as Superman, and while I wish his costume had a few tweaks, the man inside is really pretty great as Superman/ Clark Kent. We saw him talking to Lois on the phone, and Season 1 featured Lois Lane's sister, Lucy, as a romantic rival for Jimmy Olsen (this is comics canon in a way, going back to the Silver Age, but it was nowhere near as goofy as anyone showing interest in Jimmy in the comics).
Season 4 of Supergirl started production a while back (and will begin airing in October? Maybe?), and us Superman/ Lois fans were thrilled to hear that the CW was seeking a Lois Lane for their TV multiple TV series.
People - we have our Lois.

Happy Birthday, Amy Adams
Today is the birthday of Amy Adams, one of the finest talents of our era.
And, hey, we were lucky enough to get her cast as Lois Lane, plus she turned up that time on Smallville before she broke big. So, entirely relevant to this blog.
Happy birthday to Ms. Adams. We promise to watch her HBO show eventually, but we do not have an HBO.

Super Watch: Superman - The Movie (1978) at Austin's Paramount Theatre
Watched: 07/29/2018
Format: Paramount Theater Summer Classic Film Series
Viewing: I believe we are northwards of 40 at this point. Maybe the 50th.
Decade: 1970's
The past few years, I haven't had the wherewithal or ability to get downtown much for Austin's Classic Cinema Series at The Paramount Theatre. This year's programming fit the bill for showing "classic film", and while I understand *some* grumbling from friends who don't love the line-up, if you're part of the TCM twitter crowd, as these things go and for the audience it's aimed at - honestly, it's one of their better years. Have I made it down there? No.
I wasn't sure I'd actually bother to go down and see Superman: The Movie (1978) as part of their family film sub-series, either, but Jamie cut me loose to go with PaulT, so I made an effort. Unfortunately, I got my times wrong and I was buying my soda, thinking I had 30 minutes to leisurely find Paul and chat for a bit, they shut the doors. I ran up to the balcony and got to my favorite seat in the theater.
I'm glad I did.

Happy B-Day to Margot Kidder!
Happy Birthday to Margot Kidder!
She is, of course, one of the greats of Superman media as Lois Lane in four Superman films and with a brief stint on Smallville. Arguably, Kidder did quite a bit to pivot the popular conception of Lois as less a straight-laced member of the newsroom (something she never was in the comics, but that's how she was played on TV's Adventures of Superman) and into the gutsy risk-taker with no time for a Dictionary that made absolute sense as the kind of woman who would capture the heart of the Man of Steel.
And, she's absolute dynamite in those first two Superman movies. The interview scene is pretty incredible if you haven't seen it in a while.
Happy Birthday, Ms. Kidder!

DC Comics' Rebirth - DC Tries To Get It's Groove Back
I'm buying way, way more in the way of DC Comics these days then I have in a few years. Not as many as I might have been back in the hey-day around 2007 (back when I was practically panic-buying comics, afraid I'd miss something), or even as many as I was in the days before DC's New 52 effort launched, but I'm back up from, like, 3 per month (I was picking up Action, sometimes Superman, Sensation Comics and Wonder Woman '77 when it came out).
But, back then, I was literally picking up about 25 DC titles per month, I think. It was a lot, but I was a Wednesday comics guy, I liked keeping up weekly and monthly with all the ongoing characters and stories, seeing what would happen, good, bad, otherwise, and it was the constant decision-making of "is this comic worth picking up or should I try something else?". At the core of all the titles I read were four characters - Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Batman (in a somewhat managed capacity as there was always too much Batman on the shelf). The rest were usually up for debate.
With Rebirth, I'm picking up a few titles:
Action Comics
Superman
Wonder Woman
The Flash
Titans
Justice League
Superwoman
New Superman
Supergirl (not yet released)
All Star Batman
Trinity (not yet released)
and probably the Super Sons title or whatever it's called, which will come out this Fall.
I'll be waiting on word from folks to see if any of the Green Lantern titles are worth it, but I'm not holding my breath. When they quit making the book about the Corps shattering and reforming and shattering and reforming, somebody wake me up and alert me.

Happy Belated Birthday to Noel Neill, Our Lois Lane!
November 25th marked Neill's 95th, and we want to wish her a very happy belated birthday.
Ms. Neill was not in the first season of The Adventures of Superman when the role was played by actress Phyllis Coates. She arrived in Season 2, and brought her own spark to the part.
She had practice! Neill also played Lois in the 1948 Superman serials starring Kirk Alyn as The Man of Steel.

Supermarathon! Superman: The Movie (with Paul and Valerie)
I've been to movies many, many times with Paul, and every time, the following happens:
The movie ends, the lights come up, we exit the theater, and stand around talking. I ask "So, what'd you think?" and Paul sort of ponders for a second, then says "I don't think I liked it."
I can only recall Paul saying he liked one major release movie, but I wasn't there for it.
This evening he and Valerie (Paul's steady lady friend) came over and we all watched Superman: The Movie.
No, I have no idea how many times I've seen the movie, but I'd guess I've seen it a few dozen times. I know I've seen it theatrically at least 3.3 times.
RHPT, Steanso, Lucy, Adriana, Peabo and Jamie in Beaumont - no longer watching Superman: The Movie, circa 2005 |
Tonight, nothing broke. I have no idea what Paul thought of the film, but he did tweet that he'd seen it, so he was at least willing to acknowledge the experience.

Happy Valentine's Day to Superman and Lois Lane
Just think of The League as your shifty bellhop of love |
Aside from my folks, I honestly think my earliest ideas about romance probably came from movies and cartoons, and, later, comics. I mean, I remember watching Hart to Hart and thinking those two had a pretty ideal relationship, but I don't recall much from TV for adults that informed my ideas about how to actually pursue the ladies or what blossoming romance might look like.
The Leia/ Han relationship of Empire attempted to teach me a lot of things.
1. Sometimes a bit of verbal combativeness is flirting
2. Carrie Fischer looks great in a snowsuit
3. You can find romance when stranded inside a giant spaceworm
4. When you're ready to make your move, turn off the droids
5. When it looks like all is lost and it's time to express how you really feel about each other, when she confesses in front of a bunch of strangers, that she loves you, always say "I know". That shit is COOL.
As much as I appreciated Kirk using the Enterprise as his personal chick-magnet, he never really had an ongoing romance for more than episode or two, and maybe there's something to be learned from that. Space Bros before Space Ladies.
I was always a little sad that Marion Ravenwood only appeared in one Indiana Jones movie, that is until recently. She was the only leading lady who seemed like a good match (clearly, Willie Scott was not up to the task).
But, going back further, I do think the Superman movies did a good job of setting up the romance for a strange being from another world and a career gal in the big city. Aside from Han and Leia, I think the pair I remember pulling for the most in movies from back in the day was Lois and Superman. Despite all his, frankly, totally awesome powers, it seemed Clark Kent was no better around women than any of us, and could be jut as quickly and totally swept off his feet by a woman who isn't going to notice him until he drops a yacht in front of the police station.

Oh, for Pete's sake, DC. Just let Rob Pratt make Superman cartoons for you.
You'll remember Rob Pratt from his prior Superman Classic cartoon.
These things totally get everything great about pre-Crisis Superman. Especially the circa 1941 years. Just great Lois and Clark chemistry.
Special thanks to SimonUK for showing me the latest video. We've been emailing back and forth today in a sort of geek fest on the topic.
