Some items about which I do not give a @#$%

Folks who've been floating around for a while will know this about my approach to the Academy Awards:  I read the results in the morning after skipping the telecast, and sometimes I even flip through a gallery of "celebs" on the red carpet, because, hey why not?  I want to see ScarJo all dolled up, too.  But I can do it without suffering through any programming by E!

But that's the way it is.  We all have things we just don't give a @#$% about that are very important to our loved ones, our friends, our co-workers, and whomever is running what I see at Yahoo! and often on Twitter.

Perusing this blog will tell you - I obviously care deeply about a lot of things that absolutely do not matter.  Clearly I'm bummed about things like the appearance or disappearance of Superman's outer/underwear.  I care about the fate of imaginary superdogs.  I get huffy that more people don't go to see movies at 11:00 in the morning.  I wonder why there are so few images of Marie Windsor for me to re-post from the internet.

Here is a list of things I supposed to care about that I basically do not give a @#$% about.  Not "I am hostile and am angry" but, "no, I heard you.  I understand, but when I think about those things, the neurons are barely firing here behind my eyeballs":

  • The Oscars
  • video games
  • pro-wrestling
  • Dr. Who
  • Anything by Joss Whedon
  • Kevin Smith and any of his projects
  • seeing Ghost Rider 2
  • that the new Star Trek is totally different from old Star Trek and makes no sense
  • Downton Abbey
  • Adele
  • Woody Allen since 1996 or so
  • being mad at George Lucas
  • Star Wars, I guess, now that I think about it
  • Several bands that people (Randy and JimD) think I hate - REM, Nirvana, etc...
  • the resurgence of Jem and My Little Pony
  • any zombies in comics that aren't in iZombie or Bombie the Zombie
  • Avengers vs. X-Men
  • Sales figures on comics

I think that's probably a pretty good sampling.  At least as its related to this blog.

I was going to erase this post, because it seems kind of half-assed, but that's what you guys get tonight.

I'm going to go do something else.

There's a resurgence of Jem? Why hasn't anyone told me?

the 20-something comics nerds are into it. I'm not sure if they're pretending like they enjoyed it the first time around when they didn't exist.

Yeah, I am with you on some of this. I'd expand Oscars to all award shows, though. But that's just me. My list would include sports, which always baffles people, for some reason.

You probably also don't care about:

1) I used to like Jem...

2) Dr Who is really good...

Also: By "Anything Joss Whedon" do you also mean The Avengers movie?

@Gerry - Oh, yes. Outside of hearing who won a few Nobel prizes every year and why, its rare that I care all that much about Awards shows at all. I certainly don't watch them.

Sports I sort of care about. I go in waves around basketball, but I think I burn through all my sports attention during the college football season.

@Paul - I used to watch Jem when it was originally on, but haven't seen it in 20-odd years. I thought the Misfits were getting the shaft in every episode.

I understand that Dr. Who is good, and I watch it sometimes. I just never feel compelled to keep up, and I don't know why.

As per Whedon - I liked most of Firefly well enough, but I don't understand the cultish mentality around the guy's work. And, frankly, I think we won't know what Avengers is until the first reviews hit.

So you're not excited to see it?

Its pretty rare I get "excited" about seeing a new movie these days. Too many Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes" moments now get me in the door with a feeling of quiet trepidation. I get excited when I leave a movie that met or exceeded my expectations.

I was someone "excited" to see "Phantom Menace", and I think it skewed my viewing of the movie. It was a full 6 months after the initial release that I had my moment of clarity while watching the movie and saw it for it was.

I went into "Drive" hoping for a good movie and walked out feeling I'd seen a really great genre movie. I went to "Captain America" last summer expecting very little yet again from Joe Johnston and had an absolutely great time.

I understand why Whedon was selected, more for his ability to handle witty group dynamics than anything. But he has an extremely rocky past associated with his work, and I think he can be a bit too cute in his work. I'm hoping the weight of Avengers trims some of that down.

I can't think of any movies coming up that I haven't already seen that I'm excited for. These days I get excited for screenings of movies I've never seen in 35mm, or to be a part of screenings of movies that are being brought back at the Paramount, etc...

Wow, just WOW! Some of the things you don't care about make me sad. For instance:

* Adele is actually a pretty good singer. My wife has her album 21 and it doesn't make me want to tear my ears off like some other popular music.
* Dr. Who is some good sci-fi. Too bad you're not into it.
* My Little Pony is actually pretty good. Again I have a 7 year old daughter so I have an excuse to watch it.

Oh, I know you're excited about The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel.

The League said...

@RHPT: I am cautiously optimistic about "Dark Knight Rises". I am not excited about "Man of Steel". Zack Snyder.

@Simon: Yeah, the whole Dr. Who thing kind of surprises me, too. I DO enjoy it when I watch it, but I never feel like I MUST sit down and watch it or keep up. But that's generally true of me and hour-long dramas of any genre.

Again, I don't DISLIKE these items. I just haven't jumped on them as much as the internet says I should have.

Frankly, I'd buy that part of my aversion is that I feel pummeled by the internet obsession with these things.

I'm not anti-Adele, but I'm not going to buy her album.
